Petrovac is built in Roman times and it is estimated that this place was one of the stops on the Roman road along the Adriatic coast. From this period there are only two Roman mosaics in the settlement Mirište. The oldest name for this settlement is Lastva, which was first mentioned in the Chronicle – Ljetopis popa Dukljanina. In the 16th Century, the Venetians built a fortress in Petrovac called Kastio, where was stationed a garrison of Venice. In the same period was built Lazaret, a building which was used to accommodate patients during epidemics, as a quarantine. In this region were located warehouses for storage of wine and other products that were exported by ships. Today's settlement began to form in the late 18th and early 19th Century, and today represent an attractive tourist destination. In front of Petrovac is the island Katic with the church Sveta Nedjelja .According to tradition it was built by a sailor who escaped after a shipwreck on the island.
